Quote:While their previous album, Goldnigga was more hip-hop oriented, Exodus is more of a pure funk offering, strongly influenced by the sound of Parliament and P-Funk.
This album still downplays Prince's involvement in the band, with "Tora Tora", another in the long line of Prince's personas, as a background vocalist whose face is covered with a red veil (evidenced in the video of "The Good Life").
The front man for the NPG on this release is bass player Sonny T. who handles the lead vocals. Prince does provide lead vocals on two tracks, "Return of the Bump Squad" and "The Exodus Has Begun" using manipulated vocals and is clearly present on many of the spoken segues, although sometimes using a disguised accent. I would consider myself a true FUNKATEER, and this album can hold it's own with the best of them! Released in 1995, It has a strong SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE and PARLIAMENT influence on some of the songs, yet PRINCE AND THE NPG still maintained an original sound and style.
This album is one the best to ever come out on any of the PRINCE labels period. This is also a great conceptual album as well coming from an artist, band and crew that wants to represent the essence of FUNKY music!
The songs are well written, produced and of course, the band really give up the funk on these recordings. The style and sound of the music is: psychedelic, soulful, jazzy, inspired, infectious, nasty, groovin' and bumpin'! My favorite tracks are:"NEW POWER SOUL","COUNT THE DAYS","CHERRY CHERRY","HALLUCINATION RAIN",and "THE EXODUS HAS BEGUN".
In fact,the funk on this joint is so stanky,you can smell it from Minneapolis! Add this to your collection, it's sure to become a classic. (Customer from Amazon)
